News does contain information, but there’s a reason we have two different words.
News emerges out of journalism, and journalism is about narrative, and narrative exists to satiate humanity’s penchant for a dramatic story that makes sense. Why do you think we now call them news feeds? Capitalistically news is about selling those stories and profiting off their consumption.
Information, on the other hand, is knowledge, and knowledge is about understanding, and understanding is about an objective and accurate view of the world. Information is not driven by capital but rather by democratization. Information does not satiate with drama but satisfies curiosity with discovery.
News is about beliefs, and affirming those beliefs. Information is about ignorance and doing damage to that ignorance.
Watch the news, but rust information. Deconstruct the news, but build with information.
The function of news is to signalize an event, the function of truth is to bring to light the hidden facts. – Walter Lippmann
